Owing to spasmodic requirement, the storage of an extremely wide range of garments in wardrobes of theatres, event centres and the like is cost-intensive because staff needs to be at hand even between times at which garments are received and given out. In the case of self-service by the user, the invention proposes a process and apparatus for the optional, ordered storage of garments over any chosen period of time in a moving magazine in which the space required by any one item is regulated automatically. The apparatus according to the invention provides, in the case of an optionally drivable moving magazine (1), compartments (4, 19, 20), which can be displaced such that they can move relative to one another on a hanging rail (3) and are intended for the items (16) to be stored, an entry and retrieval station (5) which can be closed by means of a door (11), means for driving and control means in conjunction with a control-card dispensing unit (6) and a computer (12). The compartment (4) assigned to a control card (7) is held in the entry and retrieval station (5) by means of an indexing device (8), the drive (2) is switched off, the neighbouring compartments (19, 20) are then moved out of reach by means of a displacement device (18), the door (11) is opened, a garment (16) is manually hung in the indexed compartment (4) or removed therefrom, whereupon the door (11) closes automatically. <IMAGE>
