PURPOSE:To remove a polyhydric alcohol from a solution or suspension of a drug or its intermediate containing the polyhydric alcohol or its derivative, by contacting the solution, etc. with solidified gel of bentonite to effect the adsorption of the polyhydric alcohol, and separating the gel from the system. CONSTITUTION:A solution or suspension of a drug or its intermediate treated with a polyhydric alcohol (e.g. polyethylene glycol) for the purpose of removing the foreign materials having side effects, is made to contact with the solidified gel of bentonite to effect the adsorption of the residual polyhydric alcohol to the gel, and the gel is separated from the system. The solidified gel of bentonite keeps the capability of the bentonite to adsorb the polyhydric alcohol, and the bentonite can be separated completely and easily in the form of gel. The gelling agent is preferably agar, etc., and the solidified gel of bentonite can be prepared by suspending bentonite in water or in a buffer solution at a concentration of 0.1-10%, dissolving 1-5% agar in the solution, and cooling and solidifying the mixture.
