Device for optically scanning the surface of a cigarette rod (1) has a test head, which is constructed as a support member (18) and surrounds the rod, and in which beam-guiding means are arranged around the rod which directs light emitted from at least one light source onto the rod surface and light reflected at the rod surface to at least one optoelectric transducer. Arranged as beam-guiding means in the support member (18) around the rod guide (3) are optical lens and mirror systems (23, 24, 27, 29) which are lined up, in a direction of the normal to the rod, on neighbouring circumferential sections of the rod surface. Each lens and mirror system guides light of a light source (22) via a deflecting mirror (24) and a semi-transmitting mirror (27) radially onto the assigned circumferential section of the rod surface, and guides light reflected from the rod surface to the assigned optoelectric transducer (28) via the semi-transmitting mirror (27). <IMAGE>
