PURPOSE:To improve fuel consumption ratio by providing a gear line with a normal deceleration ratio based on a marine characteristic and a gear line with a little smaller deceleration ratio to transmit a little higher rotation number to a propeller shaft. CONSTITUTION:At a point A on a curve line of a marine characteristic S1, a ship changes from a sailing without a sail to a sailing with the sail and if the main engine rotation number is kept as it is, a horse power P1 is changed to P2 and the point A is shifted to B. When changing from the point A to B, a fuel consumption ratio is worsened and the horse power P1 is lowered to P2. Even if it is the same P2 horse power, the point becomes C on the curve S1 and the fuel consumtion ratio is good. Therefore, a lowered amount of the horse power from P1 to P2 is added in advance to obtain the point D from the point C and set a deceleration ratio to obtain a relation of the propeller rotation number having a characteristic in parallel with the marine characteristic to pass the point D and the horse power. When sailing with a sail, this gear line is used and the point A is shifted to the point C, so that a good fuel consumption ratio can be obtained.
