Process for the preparation of pyrimidines from nitrile and alkynes

A novel process is described for the preparation of pyrimidines, which comprises the cocyclotrimerisation of two moles of a nitrile which does not contain hydrogen in the alpha -position and one mole of an alkyne. The reaction takes place approximately at room temperature and in the presence of a phosphoric acid/BF3 catalyst and gives the corresponding pyrimidine in good yields.
