In order also to enable surfers to obtain measurement data on their sporting performance and technique, in particular as regards training when surfing alone outside regatta areas and during extended surfing tours, a measuring instrument is mounted on the surfboard, which supplies information at the touch of a button on the instantaneous, the average and the maximum speed, the distance surfed and the surfing time. Stored data can be retrieved when surfing has ended.
