Process for the preparation of magnesium orotate glycinate and catalyst for carrying out the process

A process is given for the preparation of magnesium orotate glycinate of the formula I or II <IMAGE> by reacting orotic acid, glycine and metallic magnesium in a molar ratio of about 1:1:1 or about 2:4:3 in water. The process is characterised in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of iron ions as catalyst. A catalyst for carrying out the process is additionally described which is distinguished in that it consists of metallic iron which is largely coated with a substance which is sparingly soluble or insoluble in water. The process has the advantage of a very good yield of the desired compounds, whose water solubility is additionally substantially improved. The compounds prepared are physiologically and pharmacologically active calcium antagonists.
