PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for drugs or agricultural chemicals by one stage simply in high yield, by bringing a benzaldehyde into contact with acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile in the presence of ammonia. CONSTITUTION:A benzaldehyde shown by the formula I (X is H, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, halogen, etc.) is brought into contact with acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile in the presence of ammonia to give a Schiff base shown by the formula II(R is H, or methyl). Benzaldehyde, tolualdehyde, anisaldehyde, etc. may be cited as the compound shown by the formula I , and these compounds may be used as a mixture containing a benzaldehyde. Ammonia may be in a gaseous state, but preferably in a liquid state. So the reaction is preferably carried out at reaction pressure >= higher than pressure required to keep it in a liquid state.
