The invention relates to a device for testing the complete volume of metallic pipes for defects, by means of ultrasound, consisting of means for conveying and guiding the pipe to be tested in the axial direction and of one or more electrodynamic transducers which are arranged at a distance from the pipe and consist of a housing having coils for producing a magnetic field and having a plurality of transmitting coils (3, 6, 13, 15) for the pulsed generation of ultrasound waves in the pipe, which coils are arranged physically in series in the region of the homogeneous magnetic field, and receiving coils (4, 7, 14, 16). In order to improve the capability for longitudinal and lateral fault indication and also to detect such faults in the complete pipe volume, it is proposed according to the invention that the plurality of transmitting coils (3, 6, 13, 15) of a transducer be wound in such a manner that current passes through them in the same direction and such that a generator is provided for each coil, and such that an electronic unit is provided which controls the generators within the clock cycle in a time delayed, adjustable manner, in the sequence of the coils allocated to them. <IMAGE>
