PURPOSE:To improve corrosion resistance of a Be material to be used as an in-furnace material in a water-cooled nuclear reactor in water of a high temp. and high pressure by orienting at least the <0001> axis of the hexagonal lattice positioned near the surface thereof in the direction perpendicular to the surface. CONSTITUTION:The manufacture of a Be material for a fuel cladding pipe, etc. of a water-cooled nuclear reactor to be used in water of a high temp. and high pressure is accomplished by hot extruding a Be cast ingot to a plate material then subjecting repeatedly the plate material to hot rolling and annealing to work the same into a Be plate material having an intended thickness. The Be cast ingot is otherwise forged by a forging press machine and is then machined and is further compression worked under the impulsive oscillation by swaging, by which the ingot is made into the plate material. The <0001> axis 2 of the Be hexagonal lattice positioned near the surface of the Be plate material is oriented perpendicularly to the surface 3 by the above-mentioned method and is oriented at >=0.37 fR value thereof, by which the corrosion resistance in water of a high temp. and high pressure is improved.
