PURPOSE:To manufacture a fiber reinforced Al alloy with superior strength and heat resistance by carrying out the manufacture of a composite billet consisting of Al alloy powder and reinforcing staple fibers and the extrusion molding of the composite billet at a temp. above the solidus line temp. of the Al alloy. CONSTITUTION:Al alloy powder is mixed with staple fibers of ceramics such as SiC, Al2O3 or Si3N4, and the mixture is hot compression-molded by hot pressing or other method at a temp. above the solidus line temp. of the Al alloy to form a composite billet contg. staple fibers in the Al alloy matrix. The composite billet is extrusion-molded at a temp. above the solidus line temp. of the matrix Al alloy in melted or half-melted state. A fiber reinforced Al alloy with superior strength, heat resistance and rigidity is manufactured.
