An assembly using non-electric components for location within a hazardous area, comprising eg. a keyboard 1 and display 2 for generating information to be transmitted to and/or for receiving information transmitted from a location outside a hazardous area and also means such as optical fibre cables 5, 6 for transmitting such information to and for from the location outside the hazardous area. The keyboard and display unit may act as a terminal for a computer 4 with keys 1 operating as switches between light sources 7 and detectors 8. The display may comprise arrays of the ends of fibre bundles 6 arranged and driven by leds 12 so as to display desired characters. <IMAGE>
