PURPOSE:To correctly control the max. injection amount in accordance with the travelling speed by detecting the combustion light inside a cylinder and controlling the increase/decrease of the max. fuel injection amount on the basis of the intensity of the combustion light. CONSTITUTION:In an electronic control circuit 51 in engine operation, the number of engine revolutions is detected from the output signal of a revolution- number sensor 39, and the fundamental max. fuel injection amount Qo is searched from a prescribed map according to the number of revolutions. The intensity of combustion light is detected from the output signal of a light detecting circuit 12a in a flame sensor 12 installed in a subchamber 13 installed in a cylinder head of an engine 11, together with the top edge part of an optical fiber 12b exposed. Then, the average value of the peak value of the combustion light is obtained, and the correction amount of the max. injection amount is calculated on the basis of the average value, and the max. injection amount is corrected according to the correction amount. Then, the injection amount is controlled by controlling a spill actuator 29 according to the max. injection amount after correction.
