The tightening device (16) for a chain or belt driving the camshaft with a crankshaft comprises a spring loaded piston (18) acting on the transmission element and a pressure chamber (23) created above the piston (18). The chamber (23) is supplied with a pressurized fluid through a check valve (20). Some of the fluid can be released through a leakage point (25) if required. The leakage point (25) is designed in order to change the flow level in relation to the position of the piston (18). The level is increased when the piston (18) is moved towards the chain or belt.
