PURPOSE:To shorten the moving distance of a printing head and enable to enhance printing speed, by a method wherein printing in a color in which a smaller amount is printed is conducted in a line mode, while printing in a color in which a larger amount is printed is conducted in a shortest printing mode, in a serial printer or the like. CONSTITUTION:In printing in red or black, when a one-line amount of printing data (a) from a buffer 14, a ribbon condition designating code from a register 13 and a printing signal from a data-discriminating part 12 are received by a controlling part 17 for a printing head and a controlling part 18 for a spacing motor 9, if it is necessary to replace a ribbon, the printing head 11 is moved to an end part to which it is closer, and the ribbon is replaced. When a red ribbon for printing at low frequency is designated, the printing direction is discriminated, and printing is conducted in the line mode by the head 11. On the other hand, when a black ribbon for printing at high frequency is designated, the printing direction is discrlminated, the head is moved as required, and printing is conducted in the shortest printing mode. Accordingly, the moving distance of the head can be reduced. |
