PURPOSE:To obtain an OH group-terminated polyoxytetramethylene glycol without using any activator, by polymerizing tetrahydrofuran in the presence of a specified catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst comprising a heteropoly acid having 0.1-15 water molecules coordinated or attached thereto is obtained by drying a hydrate (water of hydration of 20-40 molecules) of a heteropoly acid (e.g., phosphomolybdic acid) obtained by condensing at least one oxide of Mo, W or V with an oxy acid of a different element (e.g., P, Si, As, Ge, B, Ti, or Cl). Tetrahydrofuran is polymerized at 0-150 deg.C for 0.5-20hr in the presence of the above catalyst in an amount 0.1-20 times, by weight, that of tetrahydrofuran to obtain polyoxytetramethylene glycol of an MW of several hundreds to tens of thousands.
