PURPOSE:To minimize the consumption of storage area of a line buffer by processing data structure in the line buffer in the same manner as a case of deleting corrected characters at the correcting operation of overlapped characters, and reinputting the data in an underline mode. CONSTITUTION:Data previously stored in the line biffer LB of an RAM are displayed on a display device DS. When the display surface of the display device DS is the state shown in the figure A, for instance, the data structure in the line buffer LB attains to the state shown in the figure A' corresponding to the figure A. When the operator moves the position of a carsor CS on the display device DS to the position of an alphabet D on the display DS screen and depresses an underline key, the character information D already stored in the buffer LB and the inputted underline information ''-'' are located on the same address position and are overlapped characters. A CPU decides that these overlapped characters are equivalent to the underline mode -D of a character code D and replaces the character code D on the buffer LB by D which is the data based upon the underline mode.
