A backlight controlling method and a mobile communication terminal implementing the same are provided to make it easy to read or write data by converting a current back light state into a constant turn-on state in a view screen or a write-out screen for a memo or a short message. A mobile communication terminal implementing a backlight controlling method comprises a power supply(130), a backlight unit(122), a memory(140) and a timer(170). The power supply(130) supplies or intercepts power for or from the backlight unit(122). The backlight unit(122) illuminates the mobile communication terminal according as the power is supplied. The memory(140) stores a program and setup data wherein the program includes an algorithm for supplying or intercepting the power for or from the backlight unit(122) when a view or a write-out screen starts or terminates. The timer(170) constantly turns on the backlight unit(122) until the view or the write-out screen terminates, checks a passed time for turning on/off the backlight unit(122) according to previous setup after the view or the write-out screen terminates, and transmits the passed time to a controller.
