PURPOSE:To suppress the increase of a memory capacity by providing a means, which detects the line number of a read character, and a means which records the line number together with a reject code in case of an unrecognizable character. CONSTITUTION:A character cutting part 10 outputs character image data 100 and a code 101. A feature extracting and discriminating part 11 recognizes the character to the output a character code 106. A decoder 12 outputs a signal 102 when the code 101 indicates carriage return. The character code 106 is stored temporarily in a buffer memory 15 together with counter output signals 105 and 104. A processor 16 refers to the contents of the buffer memory 15 to store data of the recognition result in an external storage device 18. If unrecognizable characters are corrected collectively, the processor 16 loads data of the recognition results to the buffer memory 15 from the external storage device 18 and transfers them to a display device 17 to display them.
