PURPOSE:To reduce installation cost remarkably and to reduce stirring power for denitrification to a half by providing a denitrification tank to the fore stage and a nitration tank connected to said denitrification tank to the post stage and regulating the volume ratio of said denitrification tank to the volume of the nitration tank to 1:1.6-1:11. CONSTITUTION:Water to be treated contg. organic nitrogen compds. such as ammoniacal nitrogen, or proteins, and BOD components, etc. is introduced into a denitrification tank 11. Alcohol having lower b.p. from a line 19, and activated sludge settled and separated in a settling tank 15 are added from a line 17. The mixture is further mixed with a stirrer 11A, the BOD components in the waste water are removed biologically and the org. nitrogen compd. are decomposed to form ammoniacal nitrogen. Then, the water to be treated is introduced into a nitration tank 12 and aerated by an aeration means 12A to oxidize ammoniacal nitrogen in the water to nitrate nitrogen and the BOD component is decomposed biologically by the activated sludge and removed.
