PURPOSE:To obtain titled poly-beta-alanine of high polymerization degree, by the hydrogen transfer polymerization of acrylamide in a solvent using, as a catalyst, a specific calcium alcolate. CONSTITUTION:The objective poly-beta-alanine can be obtained by the hydrogen transfer polymerization of acrylamide in a solvent such as o-dichlorobenzene, xylene, nitrobenzene, pref. at 60 deg.C in the presence of, as a catalyst, pref. >=0.02mol per mole of the acrylamide, of a >=3C calcium alcolate (e.g., calcium propylate, calcium butylate). Normally, this polymer has a solubility in water >=10wt%, and a reduced viscosity >=1.0 determined in the form of 1wt% formic acid solution at 30 deg.C.
