PURPOSE:To obtain a liquefied oil in high yield, by carrying out the hydrocracking of a solvent-refined coal in two steps, using a specific catalyst containing VIA-group and VIII-group metals. CONSTITUTION:A solvent-refined coal is subjected to the hydrocracking by a two-step reaction using a catalyst containing one or more VI A-group metals such as Mo, W, etc. and one or more VIII-group metals such as Ni, Co, etc. A catalyst having a total pore volume of >=0.6cc/g, the volume ratio of the pore having a radius of >=100Angstrom of 20-70% and that of 37.5-100Angstrom of 30-80% is used in the first step reaction, and a catalyst wherein the total pore volume is >=0.4cc/g, the volume ratio of the pore having a radius of >=100Angstrom is 0-20%, and that of 37.5-100Angstrom is 80-100% is used in the second step reaction. The hydrogenation reaction is carried out preferably at 330-500 deg.C under a hydrogen partial pressure of 50-300kg/cm<2> for 0.1-5hr.
