NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R is lower alkyl; X is halogen; n is 0, 1 or 2). EXAMPLE:2-Ethoxycarbonyl-3-(2-chlorophenyl)-4-cyanopyrrole. USE:An intermediate for medicines and agricultural chemicals, useful as an intermediate, etc. for producing pyrrole derivatives of formula II which are agricultural and horticultural germicides in high yield. PREPARATION:A cinnamonitrile of formula III [Z is halogen, cyano or sulfonyl group of the formula SO2r (r is alkyl or aryl)] is reacted with an isocyanoacetic acid ester of formula IV in an organic solvent in the presence of a base or catalyst at room temperature - under cooling to give the aimed compound of formula I .
