A grip for lifting off successively the top layer of a stack of pieces of fabric which may be penetrated by needles without significant damage comprises a row of clamps each of which has a vertical piston ending in a small flat foot with a small hollow point to partially penetrate the fabric. Suction can be applied via a passage coaxial with the point to raise the border of the piece sufficiently for an adjacent mechanical clamp to pivot into position to clamp the border of the piece firmly against the underside of a foot. The row of clamps may then be actuated simultaneously to move or release the top piece from the stack to a specific location or carrier.
