NEW MATERIAL:A benzoyl indolecarboxylate of formula I (R1 is H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl, acetyl or benzoyl; R3 is H or lower alkyl; A is single bond substituted at the 2-, 3- or 5-position of the indole ring, alkylene or vinylene) and an acid addition salt thereof. EXAMPLE:1-Isopropyl-4-[ 4-(1-acetyl-5-methoxy-2-methylindole-3-acetyloxy)benzoyl] piperazine. USE:With specific inhibitory action on chymotrypsin, and useful as a remedy for pancreatic diseases. PREPARATION:A 4-substituted phenol of formula II is reacted with an indolecarboxylic acid of formula III in the presence of a dehydrating agent, e.g. dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, to give the compound of formula I .
