PURPOSE:To purify tocopherol in high purity, by dissolving a composition containing tocopherol in a solvent, and passing the solution through a non-polar polymeric adsorbent resin, thereby selectively adsorbing the pigments existing as impurities. CONSTITUTION:A tocopherol-containing composition is dissolved in a solvent (e.g. ethanol), and the solution is passed through a non-polar polymeric adsorbent resin (e.g. Duolite S-861) to effect the selective adsorption of the pigments existing in the composition as impurities and obtain purified tocopherol. The decolored tocopherol obtained as the unabsorbed fraction can be delivered as the final product only by distilling out the solvent. The product has higher color stability than the product obtained by conventional process, and the process for the removal of the adsorbent is unnecessary in the above process. The pigments can be removed without troubles even if the polar solvent contains an acid, and accordingly, the discoloration by the desorption of non-alpha-tocopherol fraction with an acid in a basic anion exchange resin, etc. can be carried out successively to the above purification process.
