PURPOSE:To obtain easily the titled compound useful as a raw material for herbicides in high yield, by reacting a 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde with an alpha-halogenoalkanoic acid ester, and reacting the resultant reaction product with a peroxide, and hydrolyzing the reaction product. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I is reacted with a compound of formula II(R<1> is H or CH3; R<2> is 1-5C alkyl; X is halogen) in a solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, in the presence of a base, e.g. sodium carbonate, and if necessary a phase transfer catalyst, e.g. trimethylbenzylammonium chloride, preferably at 50-100 deg.C temperature to give a compound of formula III, which is then isolated and reacted with a peroxide, e.g. peracetic acid, preferably at 20-50 deg.C temperature to afford a compound of formula IV. The resultant compound of formula IVis then hydrolyzed under the same temperature conditions as in the above- mentioned oxidation step to give industrially and advantageously the aimed compound of formula V.
