By condensation of ortho-chlorophenylacetic acid with 2,6-dichloroaniline in the presence of a copper catalyst and of an alkali metal salt, ortho-(2,6-dichloroanilino)phenylacetic acid is obtained in one reaction step and in high yield. Preferably, the compound is converted into its sodium salt, which is the antirheumatic and analgesic known as diclofenac sodium.
