1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthacene derivatives and a process for their preparation

The new naphthacenylene 5,12-diacetates of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<1> represents hydrogen, hydroxyl or methoxy, R<2> represents methyl or lower alkoxy and Ac represents acetyl can be used as intermediates in the production of antibiotic anthracycline glycosides. The compounds of the formula I are obtained from corresponding naphthacene-5,12-diones by reduction and acetylation.
