4-Alkylimidazole derivatives of the formula I I where R1 is C1-C4-alkyl, R2 is chlorine or bromine and R3 is an -OR4 or -NR5R6 group in which R4 is C1-C4-alkyl, R5 is hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl and R6 is C1-C4-alkyl or is phenyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by 1 or 2 halogen atoms, and its salts, their preparation and their use as nitrification inhibitors.
