In a process for expanding expandable material, especially perlite, by shock heating in which the material to be treated is subjected to a short-term, shock-like thermal effect, the economic efficiency and the throughput rate are to be improved. This is achieved by the fact that the shock heating is carried out on a vibrator conveying trough (1). A vibrator conveying trough for carrying out the process is of closed design and has a material feedpoint at its start (feed side 1a) and at least one material discharge point at the end (discharge end 1b), a burner arrangement (10) is provided between material feed point and material discharge point, with the help of which the expandable material can be heated, and feed points (4a, 7a) for treatment gases are provided at the feed side (1a) and at the discharge end (1b) of the vibrator conveying trough (1). <IMAGE>
