A method for the introduction of charge air into the cylinder of a combustion engine in which the piston of the engine draws in part of the charge air and additional air is introduced into the cylinder until the required charging pressure is achieved, that is either from the start of intake to the end of intake with gradual increase of the charging pressure to the required value, or only during the piston movement in the area of the bottom dead centre. In order to implement the method, the engine is provided with a displacement supercharger, which has at least one supercharger chamber, the swept volume of which is just large enough for it to meet the maximum air demand of a single engine cylinder for a single working cycle, supercharger and engine piston movement being synchronised in such a way that the supercharger then compresses the air and expels it into the engine cylinder when the engine piston is performing the induction stroke.
