PURPOSE:To improve brightness and contrast through simple constitution by dividing scanning electrodes on a liquid-crystal display panel into plural groups, and driving the respective groups in parallel. CONSTITUTION:The liquid-crystal display panel 1 is constituted by arranging matrix type liquid-crystal display units 211-254 in five rows and four columns on the same plane on a fitting frame and fitting circuit substrates 3 for driving the respective units at side parts of the fitting frame. When a video signal is supplied from a terminal 9 to a video signal generating circuit 8, sampling signals of 64X4 points are converted into a digital signal with 16 gradations at every 1H (one horizontal scanning) period and then stored, and timing signals are supplied to a row electrode scanning circuit 5 in the panel 1 and column electrode drivers 711-754 in the panel on the basis of a synchronizing signal. Thus, row electrodes in the respective groups of the display unit 2 are scanned successively and column electrodes of units belonging to the respective groups are scanned successively corresponding to a display image.
