An armature (22) is seated on a shaft (18) which can rotate but cannot be displaced axially. Said armature (22) interacts with at least one fixed-position core (15) which is surrounded by an energising coil (20), both the armature (22) and the core (15) having mutually facing pole surfaces (33, 32) which have the shape of a helical surface and, between them, bound an axial working air gap. The width of this working air gap with respect to the core (15) changes during a revolution of the armature (22). In order, in particular, to achieve greater freedom in the selection of the maximum operating stroke (rotation angle) of the armature (22) with an initial torque which is as high as possible, both the armature (22) and the core (15) in each case have a single pole surface (33, 32), and a projection (34), which is coaxial with respect to the shaft (18), is like a hub, and engages in a depression (31) which is constructed in a matching manner in the core (15) or in the armature (22), thereby forming an essentially radial air gap (35), is constructed on the armature (22) or on the core (15), within the relevant pole surface. <IMAGE>
