PURPOSE:To polymerize an alpha-olefin in markedly improved catalyst activity, by polymerizing it in the presence of a catalyst comprising a solid catalyst impregnated with specified MgCl2 and an organoaluminum compound. CONSTITUTION:MgCl2 having a moisture (as measured by Karl-Fischer's method) of 0.1-16wt% is copulverized with a liquid organic compound (e.g., orthoacetate ester), and the product is contacted with a liquid titanium halide (e.g., TiCl4) under heating to obtain a solid catalyst. An alpha-olefin is polymerized at a pressure of normal pressure -50kg/cm<2>G and a temperature of normal temperature -100 deg.C in the presence of the solid catalyst and an organoaluminum compound (e.g., diethylaluminum chloride).
