A hydraulically operated hammer having a housing (10), which is formed with a cylinder and in which a double-acting piston (11) can be moved in a reciprocating manner, a tool (12) extending from the housing (10), which tool (12) is arranged in such a way that it can be acted upon by the piston (11) at the end of its working stroke, and having a control valve (14), movable in a reciprocating manner in a valve chamber in the housing, for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid to and from the cylinder for producing the reciprocating movement. The control valve extends in the longitudinal direction with regard to the cylinder (11) and is arranged at one end of the same and is provided with a central longitudinal bore (34) which in one end position of the control valve (14) connects one end of the piston (11) to the pressure line (39) for the hydraulic fluid, pressurised hydraulic fluid being directed via the bore (34) in the control valve (14) to the piston (11) in order to produce the working stroke of the piston (11). <IMAGE>
