ORGANIC HIGH-MOLECULAR MEMBRANE

PURPOSE:To provide an org. high-molecular membrane which can surprisingly control the permeability of various materials therethrough by controlling nematic liquid crystal orientation, by incorporating a nematic liquid crystal material in a specified heat-resistant org. high-molecular material. CONSTITUTION:5-95pts.wt. nematic liquid crystal material (e.g. methoxybenzylidene-p-n-butylaniline) is blended with 100pts.wt. heat-resistant org. high-molecular material (e.g. polymethyl alpha-chloroacrylate) which gives a membrane structure such that when it is mixed with the nematic liquid material and the mixture is molded into a membrane, the cross section of the film has a cellular structure and the cell size will decrease as it approaches the surface of the membrane. The resulting mixture is dissolved in a solvent (e.g. dimethyl sulfoxide) and cast on a glass plate into a membrane.
