In a ram extruder which is equipped with a slide-fixing device and a rearwardly extending indirect extrusion ram (14), the ram (14) normally extends through a die carriage (15), the rear end of the ram engaging with a free die which is disposed on the front end of a strand container (19) behind the ram (14). After a pressure-generating device has extruded a strand (21) through the die (20) and the slide-fixing device has been opened, the ram (14) is moved forwards without contacting the die carriage (15) when the die is pushed into the carriage (15), which is then moved laterally out of the slide-fixing device housing transversely to the extrusion ram for cleaning or exchanging the die (20). <IMAGE>
