The invention relates to a process for the aerobic stabilisation of sludge, in which the sludge, during a degradation process, is treated with air and/or oxygen as treatment gas in at least one gas treatment reactor 1, during which the sludge is circulated and kept within a mesophilic or thermophilic temperature range. To utilise the heat produced from the metabolic activity of the microorganisms, after the degradation process, the sludge is expanded in an expansion vessel 6 to subatmospheric pressure, and the vapours produced in the expansion are incorporated via a vapour line 7 directly into a sludge stream, preferably into the raw sludge incoming via a sludge feedline 2. In this case, the raw sludge is expanded by means of a vacuum pump 9 in a mixing vessel 8 connected to the vapour line 7 to the same subatmospheric pressure as the treated sludge in the expansion vessel 6. In addition, the heat transferred during the degradation process in the gas treatment reactor 1 to the exhaust gas can be utilised by connecting the exhaust gas line to a gas input device 12 arranged in the sludge feedline 2 and introducing the exhaust gas into the raw sludge (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
