The device stands on the customers' tables in restaurants. It offers the customer the facility of issuing at any time a visual signal by a simple manipulation of the device, this signal being easily perceived by the service personnel even from a substantial distance. The device can consist, for example, of a vertical rod projecting from a baseplate, on which rod a visually striking sliding sleeve can be moved up and down, this being retained at any height on the rod by friction. If the customer requires service, he moves the sliding sleeve from the lower end of the rod upwards to the top, where it is automatically locked. The service personnel can now perceive this visual signal from a substantial distance and attend at the table in question. The movement of the sliding sleeve to half the height of the rod can represent the signal "bill, please". The device releases the customer from the previous irritation of watching out for and calling the service personnel.
