PURPOSE:To provide a thermal energy storage material which consists of a porous superhigh molecular polyethylene with a specified limiting viscosity number, has a consistent specific surface area even when hated above its melting point, shows no lowering of heat efficiency in repeated use and is useful for solar energy storage unit, waste heat recovery unit, etc. CONSTITUTION:The latent heat type thermal energy storage material comprises porous superhigh molecular polyethylene having a limiting viscosity (eta) of 5dl/g or higher and a void percentage of 5-80% (obtd. by Ziegler polymn. of ethylene or its mixt. with a small amt. of alpha-olefin). The porous polyethylene is obtd. by filling a thermal energy storage tank, container, mold, etc. with strings formed by melt extrusion of the superhigh molecular polyethylene or pieces formed by compression molding which become bulky when filled and heating them to a temp. above the melting point, usually 150-200 deg.C to cause partial welding. The thermal energy storage material undergoes no change of shape even when heated above the melting point, maintains consistent specific surface area and is suitable for solar energy storage unit when combined with ethylene glycol, silicone oil or water.
