A recording apparatus, a reproducing apparatus, and an optical recording medium are provided to use a write-once recording medium depending on whether defect management is adopted, by arranging a temporary defect management area and defect management area on a lead-in area and a lead-out area of the optical recording medium. An optical recording medium(22) includes a lead-in area, a data area, a lead-out area, a temporary defect management area for storing a temporary defect list regarding detected defects from the data area and a temporary disk definition structure for managing the temporary defect list, and a defect management area for storing a final temporary defect list recorded on the temporary defect management area during finalization of the optical recording medium and a final temporary disk definition structure. An apparatus for recording data on the optical recording medium comprises a pickup(21) and a control unit(23). The pickup irradiates light to transfer the data with respect to the optical recording medium. The control unit selects a defect management on mode or a defect management off mode to determine whether to execute defect management, while a data is recorded on the optical recording medium, and controls the pickup to record the temporary disk definition structure including information on the size of a spare area allotted in the data area, on the temporary defect management area arranged in the lead-in area or lead-out area.
