A recording method and a reproducing method are provided to achieve selective use of a recording medium with or without executing defect management by selectively allotting a spare area for the data management in a part of a data area depending on whether the defect management is selected. An optical recording medium includes a lead-in area, a data area, a lead-out area, a temporary defect management area for storing a temporary defect list regarding detected defects from the data area and a temporary disk definition structure for managing the temporary defect list, and a defect management area for storing a final temporary defect list recorded on the temporary defect management area during finalization of the optical recording medium and a final temporary disk definition structure. A method of recording data on the optical recording medium comprises the steps of: selecting a defect management on mode or a defect management off mode to determine whether to execute defect management, while a data is recorded on the optical recording medium(15); and if the defect management on/off mode is selected, recording the temporary disk definition structure including information on the size of a spare area allotted in the data area, on the temporary defect management area arranged in the lead-in area or the lead-out area(30).
