3-Isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5-trimethyl-cyclohexylisocyanat wird ohne Mitverwendung von Phosgen nach einem Mehrstufenverfahren hergestellt durch a) Umsetzung von 3-Aminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexylamin mit Harnstoff und Alkohol in Gegenwart von Dialkylcarbonat und/oder Carbamidsäurealkylester sowie gegebenenfalls Katalysatoren zu 3-Alkoxicarbonylaminomethyl-3,5-trimethyl-1-alkoxicarbonylamino-cyclohexan, b) Abtrennung und Rückführung in die Reaktionsstufe (a) von Alkohol, Dialkylcarbonat und/oder Carbamidsäurealkylester aus der Reaktionsmischung, c) Verdampfung des 3-Alkoxicarbonylaminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethyl-1-alkoxicarbonylamino-cyclohexans, d) Spaltung der Dämpfe in 3-Isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5-trimethyl-cyclohexylisocyanat und Alkohol und e) fraktionierte Kondensation der Spaltprodukte.
