PURPOSE:To obtain a p-halogenated alkylbenzene useful as a raw material for medicines and agricultural chemicals, etc. in high selectivity, by halogenating an alkylbenzene with a sulfuryl halide as a halogenating agent in the presence of zeolite L as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An alkylbezene having preferably a 1-4C alkyl group is reacted with a sulfuryl halide, preferably sulfuryl chloride in the presence of 0.01g or more, preferably 0.1g or more based on one mole alkylbenzene, zeolite L [crystal aluminosilicate having 4-8 molar ratio (SiO2/Al2O3)] at 0 deg.C- the boiling point or below to give a p-halogenated alkylbenzene, particularly p-chloroalkylbenzene selectively and efficiently with suppressed formation of o-, side chain- and polynuclear halide, etc. This method has very high effect as follows; The post-treating operation is easy, and the catalyst can be reused, etc. |
