The mechanism for controlling the quantity of solid fuel supplied to firing installations has a weighing machine (6) establishing the wt. of fuel in transit, feeding this as controlled variable to a quantity controller (4) which responds by varying the outflow from a storage bunker towards a desired value. Fuel humidity may be established as a disturbance and fed into the controller as a supplementary controlled variable, as may be combustion-condition indicators such as furnace temp. CO2- or O2 content. The desired value may be fixed or variable.
