PURPOSE:To recognize a character or the like engraved on a structure in liquid by scanning the character or the like by using a linear focusing beam or a non- focusing beam and extracting the feature of a pattern of an ultrasonic echo signal obtained by said scanning. CONSTITUTION:To read out the character or a pattern engraved on the upper surface of a steel material 1 set up in water, the character or pattern is scanned by a linear focusing beam type or non-focusing beam type ultrasonic probe 4 from an automatic scanner 6 and a control device 7. The scanner 6 is provided with a linear scanning means 61, a rotary scanning means 62, a linear scanning shaft 63, a rotary scanning ring 64, a vertical shaft 66, etc. The probe 4 executes linear scanning by the means 61 and the scanning intersecting with the linear scanning at right angles by the means 62. The means 61 includes functions moving the probe 4 vertically and adjusting the angle of incidence, and at the start of reading, the vertical position and the incident angle of the probe 4 are set up to prescribed values. The scanning means is positioned by the device 7.
