PURPOSE:To form easily a water-repellent oxide hydrate film with superior corrosion resistance on the surface of Al or an Al alloy by immersing an oxide hydrate film formed on the surface of the metal in trichloroethylene to allow trichloroethylene molecules to be adsorbed on the film. CONSTITUTION:Al or an Al alloy is immersed in demineralized water or distilled water heated to >= about 35 deg.C to form an oxide hydrate film by >= about 5mg/dm<2>. This film is immersed in a trichloroethylene bath heated to >= about 60 deg.C for about 15sec - several ten min., or it is treated with vapor of trichloroethylene to allow trichloroethylene molecules to be adsorbed on the film. Thus, a water-repellent surface film with superior corrosion resistance, especially pitting corrosion resistance is formed easily and inexpensively.
