PURPOSE:To make easy switching of soft or the like possible by making it possible that disc mediums used with individual rotation numbers are used in the same floppy disc device. CONSTITUTION:Mediums 3 set to a drive device 1 have the same standards of outside dimensions but are different in electric characteristic and cannot be identified from one another by the drive device 1 itself. Therefore, the signal on a rotation number switching signal line 15 is set to ''0'' in an external device side to read a medium in the high-speed rotation mode. If it cannot be read normally at this time, the signal on the rotation number switching signal line 15 is set to ''1'' to switch the mode to the low-speed rotation mode, and the read is retried to discriminate whether the medium can be read normally or not. Characteristics of a motor control circuit 5, a write amplifier 7, and a read amplifier 8 are switched in the drive device 1, and those of a fundamental clock generating circuit 11 and a voltage control oscillator 12 are switched in a controller 2.
