MOTHER-OF-PEARL COLORING METHOD

Ground mother-of-pearl having a thickness of 0.4-1 mm is immersed in an alk. soln. (pH 9-10, caustic soda water or ammonia water) at 110- 120≦̸C for 5-6 hrs. in a vapor tube of 1-2 atm. The colloidal ingredient of the mother-of-pearl is decompd. and gushed. Many pores are created in the mother-of-pearl from the expansion phenomenon that results from the heat and pressure. These pores are then permeated with a pigment using a known dyeing process and show uniform color.
